China is reputed as the "Bamboo Kingdom". China not only is a big country of bamboo resources, but also has already accumulated rich experiences in bamboo’s research, exploitation, production, and management etc. China is in an advanced position of the world in many aspects of bamboo. Marked achievements have been scored in bamboo integrated processing and utilization in an industrialization scale and is playing active and important roles in poverty alleviation for well-being, women in development and improvement of ecological environment. China’s bamboo sector is growing into a booming and sun rising industry streamlined from cultivation, integrate processing into export, and becoming a pillar of agricultural economy. The total production value of bamboo sector in China in 2007 is over US$ 7.5 billion. Bamboo has been playing an increasingly important role on forest sustainable development and replacing wood with bamboo thanks to its unique harmony of ecological, social and economic benefits.
CBRC is attached to the State Administration of Forestry (SAF), and affiliated to China Academy of Forestry (CAF), which is China’s top national forestry institute. CBRC is established in 1988 and headquartered in Hangzhou which not only is a picturesque city, but also one of China’s most dynamic and booming regions of bamboo’s R. & D., production and marketing etc. It has 3 Missions as enshrined by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) and SAF:
For the above Mission, CBRC has been holding with great success 19 multilateral training courses/workshops entrusted by the MOFCOM, United Nations Development Program (UNDP), United Nations Industry Development Organization (UNIDO), and bilateral ones with some individual governments such as India, etc. So far, around 700 participants from 65 countries have been well trained, which is definitely playing a huge role in the promotion of world bamboo development.
On June 1, 2007, Mr. Wei Jianguo, Vice Minister of MOFCOM made an inscription for CBRC “Training people for human development, and cultivating bamboo for ecological and social harmony”, which is a high praise and encouragement for our training achievements.
In this context, the Chinese Government decides to sponsor “2008 Training Course on Bamboo Technologies for Developing Countries”. Fortunately, CBRC is entrusted by the MOFCOM to organize this training course to improve the development of international bamboo sector and to deepen the south-south cooperation.
