The mission of UNESCO-IHE is to contribute to the education and training of professionals and to build the capacity of sector organisations, knowledge centres and other institutions active in the fields of water, the environment and infrastructure, in developing countries and countries in transition.

UNESCO-IHE offers various postgraduate programmes at the Master of Science (MSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) levels. All courses aim at educating the participant to develop a problem-solving attitude, and to take into account the multidisciplinary setting of problems in achieving sustainable solutions. UNESCO-IHE-trained professionals are equipped to work on strategic, technical and managerial challenges at local, national and international levels.
UNESCO-IHE offers four 18 month Masters Programmes with fifteen specialisations in the fields of water, environment and infrastructure, with a focus on poverty alleviation and sustainable development.
The programmes are modular in structure, thereby creating opportunities for increased flexibility in the exchange of modules between programmes - including those of partner universities - and optimising the 'blend' of learning scenarios. These programmes are increasingly being offered jointly with partner institutes.
